Tips for Travel Wellness

Summer is almost here, which means that many of us are beginning to plan (or daydream) about upcoming vacation plans.  To ensure that you enjoy your time off to the fullest, check out our handy preparation list to help avoid common health complaints that could put a damper on vacation fun.

  • Digestive upsets: Motion sickness is a common and bothersome occurrence, especially during air and sea travel. Sipping on ginger ale can help to alleviate nausea and settle the stomach. Chewing mint gum or eating plain crackers can also ease queasiness. Herbs such as Zingiber officinalis (Ginger) and Mentha piperita (Mint) can provide digestive comfort and homeopathic ingredients such as Kalium phosphate, Cocculus and Pulsatilla vulgaris are also useful to promote comfort while traveling.
  • Insects: If you plan to spend some time outdoors, take some precautions to help avoid bug bites and stings. Wear light colored, long-sleeved clothing during early morning and dusk hours when pesky mosquitos are at their peak to avoid itchy bites and irritated skin.  Avoid scented perfumes and deodorant sprays that may attract bees and wasps.  If you do get a few bites, cool the skin with a damp washcloth or a lukewarm shower to relieve itch.   • Sunburn: Sunburns and vacation do not have to be synonymous!  Avoid getting burned by regularly applying sunscreen (and reapplying after swimming or heavy sweating) and limit sun exposure during peak hours (10 AM- 2PM). If you do get carried away and spend a bit too long in the sun, various topicals such as calamine lotion and aloe work wonders.
