Anxiety has been around since the beginning of human civilization. However, it was not until recently that so much focus has been put on it. Anxiety is generally characterized by an overwhelming feeling of fear, nervousness and worry. For some anxiety comes and goes; for others it can be a debilitating condition affecting almost every aspect of life. Anxiety before taking a test or a big interview is normal; everyone experiences this kind of worry. It is when the anxiety won’t leave even when you’re at home when it becomes a problem. Anxiety can manifest itself in many different forms.
The most common types of anxiety include:
- Generalized Anxiety Disorder – This type of anxiety affects around 6.8 million people in the US alone. It is characterized by constant tension and worry. The afflicted person will experience this worry for an extended period of time.
- Obsessive Compulsive Disorder – Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, or OCD as it is commonly known, affects around 2.2 million people, and is considered one of the most physical and mentally demanding form of anxiety. Someone suffering from this type of anxiety disorder will experience compulsion in varying degrees. Some people might have to count every step they make, while others might obsessively wash their hands. This form of anxiety can be the most debilitating; it usually starts at a young age and may last throughout a person’s lifetime.
- Panic Disorder – Panic disorders are characterized by frequent panic attacks, which can leave the victim with extreme feelings of fear and even self-pity. These attacks are generally brought out in the face of stress.
