It’s that time again. Summer is looming in the not too distant future, causing the remaining doughnut on the table to look even more menacing than usual! But, luckily there are many natural ways to get into tip-top shape, without causing harm to the body and without disturbing systemic harmony and balance.
The body was designed to work in accordance with nature – getting goodness and nutrients from healthy natural foods like fruit, fiber, protein, dairy products and vegetables. Doughnuts do not grow on trees (luckily!). They do not grow in the ground, nor are they living animals, so they do not qualify as a “natural food”.
The body relies on metabolism to regulate the rate at which we turn nutrients into energy, and use this energy to burn unwanted fat deposits. There are three ways to boost metabolism naturally and safely: eating the correct foods, moving through exercise and getting a little help from Mother Nature!
Tips to Curb Calories (in a not-too-drastic manner)
Start small and start simple. Don’t be too hard on yourself. 1 or 2 changes daily add up to weekly success!
Instead of: 1 cup whole milk (150 calories)
Choose: 1 cup non-fat milk (90 calories)
Calorie Saving: 60 calories
Do this once a day and save: 21,900 calories per year! This is the equivalent of nearly 6.25 pounds.
Instead of: 2 eggs scrambled with butter and whole milk (261 calories)
Choose: 1 egg, 2 egg whites scrambled with no butter and skimmed milk (144 calories)
Calorie Saving: 117 calories
Do this twice a week and save: 12,168 calories per year. This is the equivalent of nearly 3.5 pounds.
Instead of: 180g cream of chicken soup (245 calories)
Choose: 180g chicken noodle soup (80 calories)
Calorie Saving: 165 calories
Do this twice a week and save: 17,160 calories per year. This is the equivalent of just over 5 pounds.
Instead of: 3 cups microwaved caramel popcorn (280 calories)
Choose: 3 cups air popped popcorn (90 calories)
Calorie Saving: 190 calories
Do this three times a week and save: 29,640 calories per year. This is the equivalent of nearly 8.5 pounds.
Total calorie saving: 80,868
Total body fat lost: just over 23 pounds!
Of course, daily exercise and balanced, lean meal plans will encourage faster weight loss. Think of it this way: The body is similar to a machine – when the correct fuels are put in and it is used correctly, no problem! However, putting in the wrong ‘fuel’ (unhealthy foods) and not using your body (sedentary lifestyle) leads to the ‘machine’ getting ‘rusty’. When the metabolism slows down, it often needs a kick-start into action. This is where Mother Nature lends a helping hand!
Herbs such as Fucus vesiculosis, Galium aperine and Zingiber officinalis can boost the metabolism while improving liver and digestive functioning. Best of all, natural remedies do so without the harmful effects of stimulant or ephedra-based OTC drugs.
