Physical exercise and mental stimulation are essential in order for them to lead a happy, fulfilling life. “They need ‘jobs’,” says Kristen Collins, CPDT, and ASPCA Animal Trainer. Just like humans, animals need to feel engaged and busy. Unfortunately in today’s society, most dogs are left alone a majority of the day.

“With nothing to do, dogs and cats are forced to find ways to entertain themselves,” explains Kristen. This is when problematic behaviors start to occur. These behaviors can include, barking, scratching, chewing, and urinating in the house.

Luckily, there are steps you can take to prevent these behaviors and health issues. Dogs need both physical and mental workouts. By following these steps, you can help your pet lead a happier, more fulfilling life.

  • Exercise. Adult dogs need at least 30 minutes of exercise twice a day. Cats need exercise as well, get your cat moving with a game of chase or fetch with their favorite furry toys.
  • Keep your dog or cat occupied when you’re not home. You can do this by giving him or her a stuffed toy or provide some treats when you leave. Cats need to be occupied while alone too. You can accomplish this by encouraging their favorite activities, such as bird watching or by leaving them in a secure outdoor area.
