A new study casts doubt on the safety of genetically modified food, as well as an herbicide.
The research was conducted by French scientist Gilles-Eric Séralini and seven colleagues and is entitled, Long Term Toxicity of a Roundup Herbicide and a Roundup-Tolerant Genetically Modified Maize.
Séralini and his fellow researchers in France and Italy report that they tested 200 laboratory rats over a two-year period.
The scientists found that rats that were fed genetically modified corn and/or the herbicide, Roundup, had higher death rates and higher rates of organ damage than rats that were fed corn that wasn’t genetically modified.
At the end of the study, the scientists say: “Altogether, the significant biochemical disturbances and physiological failures documented in this work confirm the pathological effects of these GMO [genetically modified organism] and R [Roundup] treatments in both [rat] sexes, with different amplitudes.”
In other words, genetically modified food can’t necessarily be considered safe.
If you’d like to avoid this food, the Institute for Responsible Technology publishes an online shopping guide to food that contains no GMO (genetically modified organism) ingredients.
The guide lists manufacturers from which you can buy a wide variety of food products that contain no GMO ingredients.
