Every woman wants healthy, luscious hair (and so do many men!). While you can blame some of your “bad hair days” on hereditary factors (natural blondes and those with baby-fine hair have oilier scalps), summer heat and humidity are two of the worst enemies your hair can contend with, often leading to frizz, unruliness, and oiliness. In addition, hormonal changes and stress can also cause the sebaceous glands to pump out more sebum, or oil.
To help control oily hair, try these natural tips:
- Minimize use of conditioner. If you have oily hair, try using conditioner on just your ends, as the scalp does not need excess moisturizing.
- Use a natural astringent. Greasy skin on the forehead and neck can make oily hair worse, so using cotton pads, apply some witch hazel near your scalp line.
- Avoid over-brushing. As brushing carries oil from the scalp to the ends of your hair, avoid excess brushing if you’re prone to oily hair.
- Try a natural rinse. A teaspoon of apple cider vinegar mixed in a pint of water used as a final rinse can help cut oil and remove soap residue that can weigh down hair.
