Can Your Brain Benefit From Vitamins and Minerals?

MoodIn a study published last year, scientists learned that healthy people may experience mental benefits from taking certain vitamins and minerals.1

Scientists from Northumbria University and Bayer Consumer Care recruited 210 men for the study and found that these men had better brain functions after taking a supplement containing B vitamins, vitamin C, and minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and zinc.

Each of the male volunteers was randomly assigned to either a supplement group or a placebo group. The supplement group experienced improvements in results on tests for mental performance and mood.

The authors of the thirty three-day study measured mental performance with three cognitive tests. These tests measured speed and accuracy, as well as mental fatigue.

According to the British and Swiss authors of the study, participants from the supplement group were better able to perform math calculations and had lower levels of mental fatigue.

David O. Kennedy, a professor from Northumbria University, co-wrote the study with six scientists and found that the adult volunteers showed improvements in scores on mood tests after taking the multi-vitamin and mineral supplement.

“[Participants’] ratings of their general mental health were improved in comparison to placebo…,” say the scientists.

The men who took the supplement ranged in age from thirty- to fifty-five-years old. Their scores on the POMS (Profile of Mood States) test showed that these middle-aged participants had improvements in mood after taking the nutritional supplement, according to the scientists who wrote the study.

“The POMS consists of 65 adjectives rated on a 0-4 scale that can be consolidated into ‘depression-dejection’, ‘tension-anxiety’, ‘anger-hostility’, ‘confusion-bewilderment’, ‘vigour-activity’ and fatigue-inertia’ sub-scales,” say the authors.

The authors add that the volunteers had an increase in vigor ratings. People who are vigorous tend to have healthy mental capabilities.

So, the research from European scientists shows that a combination of B vitamins, vitamin C, and minerals may be helpful for mood and mental performance.  Those research results make this combination of nutrients a good option for people who would like to support healthy brain functions.
