Summertime is here, and it’s time for those neighborly BBQ’s – the only problem? This social time may cause weight gain (for some of us at least). Sweet homemade concoctions, super-sized sides, and second helpings are all diet downers, but is there any way to possibly stay on track? Yes!
Ward off the Sweet Tooth!
The first key to eliminate summer weight gain is to drink lots of water, and stay away from too many sweets. Go for the fruit instead; the natural sugars in fruit should fix that sweet tooth for the afternoon. If you aren’t sure if there is going to be fruit at the party, bring your own! Tell your host that you would like to bring a fruit platter as your contribution.
Make your fruit platter gorgeous with colorful, low-sugar fruits such as raspberries and blackberries. Strawberries are also a great add in; though ever so slightly higher is sugar. Strawberries, in moderation, can also be eaten by those with diabetes!
Skip the Sinister Sides!
When I think of a barbecue, I can imagine the tempting sides in my head before I even arrive, such as potato salad, macaroni salad and coleslaw. The only issue is, these are some of the most calorie-rich foods on the table. All three of these delightful dishes usually contain mayonnaise, which has an 80% fat content. You would have to walk for 22 minutes at a rate of 3mph to get rid of 1 tbsp of mayo! Try vinegar-based recipes instead.
Dodge the Double Dipping!
No, I am not talking about that one person who double dips—I’m referring to the diet saboteur of going back for seconds, which is not in your best favor. A great way to keep the pounds off is too make sure that you use portion control. The size of your meat should be the size of a deck of cards, and your side dish a tennis ball. Before you stride back up to the buffet line, drink a glass of sparkling water and wait for 10 minutes. Water is a great tool to keep your appetite in check.
