ADHD Medications and Your Health
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, commonly referred to as ADHD, is characterized by poor concentration, hyperactivity, distractibility, and impulsiveness. It is one of the most common and over-diagnosed mental disorders, and is said to be the most common disorder for children, and often lasts through adulthood. According to ScienceDaily, nearly 1 million children are misdiagnosed each year!
Many children are misdiagnosed due to the fact that they are more immature than their class mates, or can’t sit still. Parents and teachers often mistake these behaviors for ADHD, when in reality the child may just be the youngest in the class. There can be a large difference of behavior between 5 and a 6 year old.
In a recent study “Early Childhood Longitudinal Study Kindergarten Cohort”, which was funded by the National Center for Education Statistics, 12,000 children were studied and compared based on ADHD diagnosis and medication rates among the youngest and oldest in each grade. They found the youngest students were 60 percent more likely to be diagnosed with ADHD. This trend can be seen throughout the country, as the study found 20 percent of the 4.5 million children currently diagnosed with ADHD have likely been misdiagnosed.
The most common symptoms of ADHD include becoming easily distracted by sights and sounds in your environment, inability to concentrate for long periods of time, restlessness and impulsiveness, a tendency to daydream, and slowness in completing tasks. Upon noticing these symptoms, many people immediately resort to prescription drugs. What they don’t realize are the problems associated with them. In the short-term the drug may seem very effective, however with time, problems can start to arise.
Side effects of prescription ADHD medications can include:
- Excessive sweating
- Decreased appetite
- Excessive talking
- Suppression of growth in height (if you are still growing)
- Heart palpitations
- Skin rashes
- Digestive problems
- Toxic psychosis
- Drug dependence (addiction)
- Severe depression upon withdrawal
The natural approach
The systems of the body are interrelated, so proper functioning and health occurs when they are in balance and harmony, making it important to consider taking a holistic approach to caring for the body.
If the body’s systems are balanced and functioning as they should, cognitive, emotional and behavioral conditions for concentration are at optimal levels. Thus, by supporting harmony and balance in the brain and soothed nerves, we can create the best climate for concentration to take place.
The following homeopathic ingredients can help promote this balance, including Hyoscyamus (30C), which has been known to help alleviate over-excitability, restlessness, and general disruptive behavior in hyperactive children, as well as Verta alb (30C), which can help bring about emotional stability and soothe the nerves during tumultuous inner struggles and conflict. Verta alb is often recommended by homeopaths for hyperactive children, or those who tend to be critical and restless.
